The government has decided to reduce the pollution content of the smoke released by the vehicles to prevent cancer. This will be done by improving the quality of the fuel used. A committee has been formed for this purpose headed by Mr. Sowmithra Chathurthi.

This committee has released ‘The fuel policy 2025’:

Presently, the vehicles plying in 26 cities in India including Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi use ‘Euro-4’ with BS-4” quality (Bharat Stage Emission Standards) fuel. Other cities use ‘BS-3’ fuel.

Before 2020, entire India will have to use ‘BS-4’ quality fuel. Accordingly, the fuel refineries are being modernized at a cost of Rs. 30,000 Crores.

The committee has recommended that the prices of petrol & diesel to be raised by 75 paise per litre in order to offset this investment of Rs. 30,000 Crores.

If this is approved, the prices of petrol & diesel will be up by 75 paise per litre all over India.
