Yesterday the five-day monthly rituals (puja) in the Malayalam month of Midhunam began at Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala.

Chief priest (Tantri) Kandararu Maheswararu, assisted by his grandson and junior Tantri Kandararu Mahesh Mohanararu, performed the Ashtadravya Ganapati Homam in the morning, followed by Ashtabhishekom and Ushapuja.

The Laksharchana was performed in the forenoon.

Brahmakalsabhishekom and Kalabhabhishekom were held amid the Utchapuja. The junior Tantri, assisted by head priest (Melsanthi) P.N. Narayanan Namboodiri, performed the Brahmakalasapuja and Kalabhapuja in the forenoon.

The golden urns carrying the sacred Brahmakalasom and the Kalabhom (sandal paste) were taken out in a customary procession for performing the Abhishekom to the presiding deity.

Padipuja, Pushpabhishekom, and Udayasthamanapuja were the other important rituals performed.

The temple will be closed after the Athazhapuja on Thursday evening, marking the culmination of the five-day rituals.
