This year, 271 students up for counseling have scored 200/200, making the competition for seats in premier colleges that much stiffer as the cutoff mark has risen. The average increase in cutoff marks will be one to two marks this year. The rise in the number of students getting perfect scores in elective subjects in the Class 12 board exam has resulted in higher cutoff marks.
This has resulted in an odd situation of all high scorers not necessarily getting their pick of the courses on offer. Branches like electronics and communication, mechanical, computer science and civil engineering are what students want during counseling, but when it comes to a seat in a premier institute, for some students, the course doesn`t matter.
There are 570 engineering colleges that will offer 2.05 lakh seats to 1.75 lakh applicants this year. The number of applications received and students applying for counseling have dropped by nearly 10% this year.
