The operation of the two Amma Canteens at Perambur with the biogas plant sets the way for the green revolution.
At the same time, a new Amma canteen with biogas plant will soon function at Loco Works Road on 25 June and another one is likely be set ready in a month time at Jawahar Nagar.
Each biogas plant will cost around 18 lakh each and honestly it is anticipated to hoard dozens of LPG fill ups.
Presently, every canteen requires two commercial cylinders daily which costs the corporation around RS.3200. And once the biogas plant starts operating, the requirement of the cylinder will be reduced to half a day. The rest of the required fuel will be supplemented by the biogas plant, said a senior corporation engineer.
Each biogas plant has the capability to deal with 500 kg of waste every day. This plant can accumulate up to 3.65 cubic meters of gas and that will be agitated in three days.
Approximately, every canteen will be producing 10-15 kg of vegetable and food waste; also the plant can amend idli batter and worned out chapatti flour into gas, said the official.
Earlier this month, officials from Egypt has stopover at few Amma Canteens in Chennai, in a proposal to reproduce the ideal in their country. After which, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha has planned placing over 360 Amma canteens athwart the state.
