MTC is set to Add 350 New Buses within 9 Months of Duration!

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation is all set to acquire 350 more buses to its regiment within the deadline of 9 months. Of the total new buses, 250 will be of regular type buses and 100 will be air conditioned buses.

With the aid of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) programme, the corporation will be getting these new services. Each regular kind of buses will cost around 56 lakhs and every AC bus will cost around 1 Crore. All these buses were framed in such a way, as it follows the recent norms created by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, said an official from the transport corporation.
Several features available in the new buses include high-resolution security camera network; automatic vehicle location system assisted with GPS and on-board pole-mounted ticketing machine. A advance technology in which the bus will able to move only when all the doors are closed, has been introduced so as to prevent footboard travel.

In total, the cost of the 350 buses comes around 240 Crore. Centre will be paying the35% of the total cost which is nearly about 85 Crores. The finance department is functioning on the red tape to assign funds in the state budget, said an official.

Experts in urban transport said that Chennai desires a minimum of about 5,000 buses to outfit to the present plead and would preferably want at least 8,000 buses for a city of its mass and inhabitants.
