The suburban train commuter is in for tough times as the ticket charge will go up from 25 June. Because of which 80,000 season ticket holders will be badly affected, as the prices of which will be approximately double.
About 10 lakh commuters use the city suburban trains as their daily mode of transport for their workplace. Even though there is no variation in the minimum charge of Rs.5, while earlier a suburban commuter can travel till 20km with this minimum fare, but now this distance has lessen down to 15km.
On Friday, Centre has pronounced that ticket charges have been mounted up by 14.2% to 10%. Monthly term ticket rates have raised twofold because railways have determined to hoard rate for 30 trips from travelers, in its place of 15 trips that are presently charged. Now, people have to forfeit Rs. 150 for a monthly ticket in place of Rs. 85, and Rs. 450 rather than Rs.235.
Within the period of five years, people who are using the trains daily has mounted up to 10 lakhs from 7 lakhs. Benefaction of MRTS has enlarged from 50,000 travelers to 80,000 travelers daily.
Railway department has started working out for the advance booking system in the future days. The ticket price hike is to perk up facilities in the suburban connections which had stayed deserted, says a railway official.
