In the course of the draining storage in reservoirs and the immense temperature, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has demand the Andra Pradesh (AP) government for Krishna water release from 1 July.
This will help out the WRD to meet the Chennai’s necessity of around 600 million litres of water every day, until the northeast monsoon lean in October, said the officials.
Currently, the Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Poondi reservoirs have storage of just 2,600 million cubic feet of water (mcft), which is less than 30% of their whole capacity. Cholavaram reservoir hanged dry since last year.
With the present storage levels, Chennai residents can be facilitated with adequate drinking water for another three months, sources from WRD said.
Also the Veeranam tank in Cuddalore district helps soothing the city’s need with the tweak of 180 MLD.
Averagely, the reservoirs evade about five mcft of water owing to evaporation every day, said an official. To make sure the delivery of drinking water to Chennai residents, WRD has highlighted on the discharge of water from A.P.’s Kandaleru reservoir, which has ample water storage.
During last year, we have received 5,600 mcft of Krishna water from AP. And hence we were capable to make sure water delivery and also preserve storage. If we acquire 300-400 cubic feet of water per second, we will be equipped to intensify storage till the monsoon, said the official.
