Anna University is examining the possibilities of starting the counselling for engineering courses by 4th July.
There 2,05,463 seats available in 571 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Out of this 1,76,000 seats are reserved as government quota. The students are admitted in this quota after counselling.
With the quotes for Sports-Talented individuals and Physically Disabled persons being completed, it was expected that counselling for the government quota would start today (Friday, 27th June).
AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) had lodged a petition. It had requested extension of time examine the applications of the new engineering colleges. After hearing on the petition, the Supreme Court granted another 7 days to AICTE to complete their assessment of the new engineering colleges. The Supreme Court also advised the counselling to be postponed to a suitable date in order to include the new engineering colleges in the admission list.
The Supreme Court also ordered that the 1st stage counselling is to be completed by 15th July. The 2nd stage counselling is to be completed by 22nd July. Engineering Colleges are to be opened by 11th August.
With these directives from the Supreme Court, the counselling which was to commence today for the open quota was postponed without any specific date.
However, many candidates from outside places had arrived in Chennai along with their parents for the counselling session at Anna University from 6.00 AM today (27th June).
The counselling committee under the leadership of Anna University registrar, Mr. Ganesan, informed these candidates about the postponement of the counselling session.
The visiting students were disappointed and started returning to their places. The secretary for the engineering course admission group, Mr. Raymond Uthariaraj informed that only less number of candidates had been called for counselling in the first stage. SMS had been sent to these candidates about the postponement.
Technical Education Collector Mr. Kumar Jayant informed that AICTE has been granted additional 7 days by the Supreme Court. Once the approval for the new engineering colleges is granted, the group will complete the counselling schedule with least disturbance.
Even if AICTE completes the assessment in 1 day, the counselling will commence within the next 2 days. The students will be kept informed suitably.
However, Anna University is examining the possibilities of starting the counselling by 4th July after the extension granted to AICTE.
