Staff of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) began inspections of high-rise buildings under construction in the city and its suburbs.

Divided into 20 teams, they were given specific areas to cover. The staff, who had been given strict instructions not to speak to the media, made measurements of the pillars and columns and also the height between each floor.

The staff also measured the thickness of beams and checked if they were as per the final planning permit issued by them to the builder. The inspection is likely to cover every multi-storey (more than four floors) building and special buildings that have been just completed.
