Chennai Metro Rail Project: A gigantic basement Central Railway Station under construction!

Chennai Metro Rail Project is progressing under an estimated cost of Rs. 14,600 Crores.

There are 2 sections in the project.

The first section runs between Washermanpet station & Chennai Airport station.

The second section runs between Central Station & St. Thomas Mount Station.

There are totally 32 railway stations covering both the routes.

The stations in the first route between Washermanpet & Chennai airport are Washermanpet, Mannadi, High Court, Central Station, Government garden, LIC, Thousand Lights, DMS< Teynampet, Nandanam, and Saidapet (all underground), and elevated corridor stations include Chinnamalai, Guindy, other stations, and Chennai airport. The elevated corridor includes Chinnamalai, Guindy, Alansur, Nanganallur road, Meenambakkam, and Chennai Airport.

The stations in the second route between Cnentral Stations & St. Thomas Mount are Egmore, Nehru Park, Kilpauk, Pachaiyappa’s College, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar East, Anna Tower, Thirumangalam (all underground), and on the elevated corridor, the other stations. The stations in the elevated corridor include Thirumangalam, Koyambedu, Koyambedu Bius Stand, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, Eekattuthangal, Alandur, and St. Thomas Mount.

 The stations have been designed and constructed with due consideration of different facilities for the passengers.

Among the underground stations, the Central Underground railway Station is taking shape in a big way!

The station covers an area of 70000 sq. Metres. This will be the largest station. It is a station built with modern faculties of the latest technology and fully air-conditioned. A parking area, with a capacity to park 500 cars and 1000 2-wheelers is being built.

Koyambedu Bus terminus Station will have 6 platforms and will carry a traffic of more than 5 lakh passengers daily. It is also planned to ply 150 buses from this station covering 4800 trips.
