Trichirapalli the fourth largest city in Tamilnadu has been ranked sixth
in the national rating of cities under the National Urban Sanitation Policy.
Trichy is the only city from Tamilnadu to have figured in the top Ten. The
rating was done on the basis of a survey on sanitation conducted by the Union
Ministry of Urban Development. The exercise covered all major cities in the
country and about 72% of urban population.
Other cities in Tamilnadu to have figured in the list of top 100 ,

Tiruvannamalai 86, Coimbatore 92 and Madurai 99 The rating for 2009-10 was
based on indicators such as eradication of open-defecation and manual
scavenging, access to toilets, safe collection, treatment and disposal of human
excreta, wastewater, solid waste and storm water and recycle/reuse of treated
wastewater, reduction of water borne diseases and environmental well-being.
