The Corporation of Chennai conducted a stakeholders’ meet on Wednesday (July 23) to seek public opinion on the construction of five new pedestrian subways in the city. The meeting took place at the Golden Jubilee Hall on the Ripon Building complex at 6 pm.

The proposed subways that was a part of discussion included one next to Meenakshi Engineering College, one near Vadapalani bus depot, a subway near the Gandhi statue on Kamarajar Street, one at Gangadheeswarar Koil Salai on Purasaiwalkam High Road and one at the intersection of Konnur High Road and Medavakkam Tank Road at Ayanavaram.

The task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been handed over to Bengaluru-based Infra Support Engineering Consultants by Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL). The public consultation meeting is the first step in this regard before the approval is granted to the DPR.

The Corporation plans to include disabled friendly infrastructure in the new subways. It remains to be seen whether the process to install CCTV cameras in subways will be kick started with these projects.

The public also expressed their opinion. They stated it would be better if the corporation provide escalators in the sub way instead of steps.
