State transport authorities, with an avid view of making all auto rickshaws charge based on meter rates, are in full swing works across the city. They started sticking stickers in autos of those who are identified as good drivers. It is noticed that autos departing from auto booths manned by traffic police are in more numbers to receive these ‘good’ stickers.
It is found that these booths are used by over 2.2 lakh passengers in 14 spots in the city. These are located at places receiving heavy crowd like Central Railway Station, Ranganathan Street, Koyambedu, etc.
How does it function?
Public can approach policemen at these booths and the will flag down auto for them. A slip containing the registration number of the auto and mobile number of constable will be given to the passenger. The passenger can call the number if the driver demands for higher charges.
Enquiring about the usefulness of the plan, deputy commissioner of police, Sivanandan said the fear of phone call makes to police constables have given positive results in more numbers.
