According to Fire Advisory Council standards, Chennai is quite short of
the number of fire stations .it
Chennai now needs at least 100 fire stations; against which Chennai now
has only 25 fire stations.
There are big gaps like Thiruvanmiyur and Thirukazhukundram about 50 km
stretch there is no fire station. Even Mammallapuram does not have one. The
recently opened station at Siruseri on the Old Mamallapuram Road is focused on
industrial fire safety. The resorts and entertainment centre on the East Coast Road
have to depend more on the Thiruvanmiyur Station. Annanagar, despite developing
as a city within city, does not have a station of its own. Its critical
parameter s such as commercial and industrial
establishments , scope crowd convergence
count for the establishment of
fires station in an area. Chennai is far
below the requirement in this aspect. Besides establishment of new fires
stations the existing fire stations need to be updated in terms of facilities
and equipments. Other aspects like
response time and Human resources need
close scrutiny.
“Chennai has to have a well prepared plan for disaster management. Fire
safety is a priority and no cost cutting should be considered,” Mr.Nataraj emphasized.
