Chennai Metro Rail Project: 2nd Stage of 45 km!

The Chennai Metro Rail Project is progressing at a cost of Rs. 36,000 Crores.

The first section is between Washermanpet & Chennai Airport via Central station & Mount Road. The second section is between Chennai Central station and Alandur via Poonamalee High Road & Koyambedu. Total distance covered is 45.1 km; part of the track will be on elevated corridor and part will be underground.

42 trains will be run. Each train will carry 4 coaches.

9 trains have been shipped from Brazil. 5 more trains have been transported from Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, where the Brazil company has set up its manufacturing plant. Thus, 14 trains are ready with 56 coaches.

Plans are schedules to commence public service from Koyambedu to Alandur.

The second stage of the Chennai Metro rail Project is estimated at Rs. 36,000 Crores.

The area of Chennai city is 1189 sq km. It is estimated that Chennai will have a population of 1.2582 Crores.

Based on this estimate, the 2nd stage of Chennai Metro Project is being planned.

3 sections are being planned. The first will be between Madhavaram & Light House at 17 km. The second will be between Koyambedu & Injambakkam at 27 km. The 3rd section will be between Madhavaram & Perumbakkam at 32 km.

Project analysis has been taken up. There may be minor changes. Additional routes are also being explored.
