There is an acute shortage of Indian Oil Corporation’s cooking gas cylinders in several places in Tamil Nadu.

IOC Officials informed:

Generally, the empty cylinders are taken for service once in 50 years.

The servicing operation takes 3 to 4 days. The cylinders will be back again in circulation.

Currently, 50000 cylinders from Chennai have been taken for servicing. 50 cylinders are serviced daily and given back for circulation.

Apart from this, some of the very old cylinders are being replaced with new cylinders.

Across Tamil Nadu, around 1.4 Crores customers have cooking gas cylinders. Chennai city alone has 22,62,000 customers. About 50% of these customers have 2 cylinders.

Around 1,85,500 old cylinders are now being replaced with new ones.

Out of this, 90000 old cylinders are from Chennai. The balance 95,500 cylinders belong to other districts.

Cylinders are expected from Dehra Dun & Andhra Pradesh within  the next 3 to 4 days. They will be put in usage gradually over the next 10 days.

However, the current shortage can be overcome only after a minimum period of 10 days.
