Among the various penances (known as ‘viratham’ or ‘nonbu’ in Tamil Nadu) traditionally undertaken by women, the first and the most important is ‘Varalakshmi Viratham’!
This occasion falls during the Tamil month of Aadi on a Friday in the growing phase of the moon.
Varalakshmi Viratham is performed for the consort of Lord Mahavishnu, Goddess lakshmi Devi.
The word ‘Vishnu’ means omnipresent ( present everywhere). The word ‘ Lakshmam’ indicates’ identity’ or ‘symbol’.
Lord Vishnu created Goddess Mahalakshmi by integrating all beautiful things in the world to establish his omnipresence.
The housewives observe this traditional penance in order to remain as ‘Sumangalis’ (married women with a living husband) for a long time.
Goddess Lakshmi appeared from the Ocean of Milk. She married Lord Vishnu. Whenever, Vishnu was born in different incarnations on earth, Lakshmi also was born to live with him.
During Lord Vishnu’s incarnation of Rama avatar (from the epic Ramayana), Goddess Lakshmi was born as Sita and undertook various hardships including a forest life for 14 years.
She was engulfed in fire to establish her chastity. She considered her husband as supreme and always cared for him, his policies, and his well-being.
All the women prefer to live in a similar fashion by being entirely devoted to their husbands and their well-being and perform Varalakshmi Viratham.
On this auspicious occasion, the women perform special puja for their ‘Mangal Sutra Known as Thali or Thirumangalyam in Tamil) sacred chain worn on the neck on the day of marriage by the husband. After the puja, they wear it again. The belief is that they will live long as a married woman with husband alive!
The children of the family observing this religious occasion will be endowed with wisdom.
Performing Varalakshmi Viratham assures a long and prosperous life for the married woman along with a long-living husband keeping her ‘mangal sutra’ in tact, and also the well-known 8 kinds of wealth bringing all that is good and wellness!
