Airlines are made to land planes on the truncated second runway by the Airports Authority of India, nevertheless the condition that they do not have any such instrument landing system at airport in Chennai.

The runway was open for operation in May but no airplane seems to have used the provision since then. This is because, pilots are to look out of their cockpit to take the plane through the runway.

The new runway was extended at Rs 550 crore cost. However, AAI failed to set up necessary instrument landing system that is required for the pilot to safely land the plane with precision.

Pilots are told to use this runway on Tuesdays and Saturdays when the main runway will be kept closed or maintenance works. The onus is put under risk while he lands the plane with nearly 180 passengers and the cargo load too, says a senior pilot.
