IMD to set up Micro-level forecasting method soon

As there is an increase in need for forecasting in micro-level, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has derived plans to develop such forecasting patterns that are specific to every three kilometers distance rater than generating reports for every 27 kilometer that is currently in existence.

Speaking to the deputy director-general of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, S.N. Thampi, he says the department would first initiate steps for forecasting pattern for every 9 kilometer after which the 3 kilometer pattern will be initiated.

They say it is important for the department to have the support and required data from private players such as Kea Weather and universities or institutions like Sathyabama University in order to make the 3 km forecasting possible in another six years.

In addition, the official also stated that IMD will take steps to set up over 34 Doppler Weather Radars (DWR) across the country in places including Ramanathapuram and Karaikkal. It is said that DWR at Karaikkal will get functional from November this year.
