In order to ensure punctuality and avoid late attendance of its employees, the Chennai Corporation has planned to introduce ‘biometric’ system for attendance in the headquarters and all other ward offices.

Chennai Corporation employs 26000 employees in 26 different departments in 15 zones.

The cleaners do not generally report on time. Biometric attendance system was introduced for them last year.

However, the system of signing in the attendance register is still being continued in many other departments and zonal offices. An expense of up to Rs. 1 Lakh is incurred to purchase the stationery such as attendance registers. The employees generally come late for the duty by one to one-and-a-half hour late! They also tend leave early well before the closing time as well!

The higher officials tend to tune ‘a blind eye’ on this gross indiscipline.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Mr. Vikram Kapoor, has ordered that ‘biometric’ system for attendance should be installed and be in operation from 1st October.
