Lakhs of devotees of various religions thronged Annai Velankanni Church in Besant Nagar on Monday at the conclusion of the 10-day St Mary’s Feast.
Priests held special prayers to mark the occasion. Huge crowds gathered since midnight on Sunday and police had a hard job regulating traffic amid the sea of pilgrims. Police stopped motorists from entering streets around Elliot’s Beach.
At midnight on Sunday, devotees cut a large cake to mark the birth of Mother Mary, which the Catholic Church celebrates on September 8. They cut another cake in the morning.
