The system of banks sending SMS messages for all account holders regarding transactions has been in practice over the last few years.

Some of the banks send the bank balance details weekly once.

Until now, this service was free.

It has now been planned to charge these sms services from 1st October. Each SMS sent by the bank will cost 50 Paise (Rs. 0.50) as additional charge.

Some private banks have announced that they will charge Rs. 20/- for every 3 months. Each bank has announced its own rate. It is expected that this measure will earn a revenue of Rs. 100/- per customer per year.

If the customer prefers not to receive sms, he can inform the bank accordingly & sms services for this account will be stopped.

A senior nationalised bank official informed that until now, the banks bore the charges of sending sms. As the expenses incurred on this front are mounting, it has been decided that this expense will now be passed on to the customer.
