100 mini-buses are plying in Chennai Metro. It is expected that 100 more mini-buses will be introduced shortly.
As shared-autos are not allowed to stop in the metro bus-stops, the public have to walk up to the nearest malls or popular public spot to get into a shared-auto.
There is a plan to run mini-buses in the same pattern like shared-autos. These minibuses will pick up & drop passengers near multi-stroreyed residential complexes, malls, and IT companies.
An official informed that minibuses will be arranged at the Egmore & Central Railway station entrance to pick up passengers.
This plan is intended to have a; large share of revenue in the shared auto systems and to attract the travelling public. It is hugely popular wherever it has been introduced.
It is estimated that about 77,500 passengers travel in the minibuses every day. Revenue of more than Rs. 5 Lakhs is being collected daily.
Passengers are delighted with this new service as the drivers stop & pick them up wherever required.
Though the shared-auto business has established strongly and cannot be whittled away, introduction of more & more mini-buses will certainly reduce the dependency on shared autos.
As the passengers do not have the patience to wait for more than 5 minutes, the autos & shared autos in the city do have roaring business.
