Fishermen in Chennai want the Marina beach not to be beautified by the city corporation, as they may not have chance of escaping in case of any unexpected natural calamity!

It is already too difficult to escape from huge tides or cyclone owing to the increasing number of large buildings and constructions at the seashore, said a fisherman.

The Chennai Corporation have plans proposed for beautifying the beach and include facilities like gym, cricket play area, parking slots, establishments for recreational activities, etc along the stretches of Neelankarai, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam beaches.

K.Saravanan of the Coastal Resource Centre said they would welcome these renovation and beautification activities if done at 200 m distance from fishermen’s residential area. However, according to the corporation’s proposal, these will be set up at 50 m distance from the shoreline which obviously will penetrate through fishermen’s place.

He added that the space provided for parking boats is too small and this will not be sufficient. Also, the officials did not get the consensus of people before sketching these plans of beautification, he complained.
