Tamil Nadu Energy Regulatory Commission (TNERC), the regulatory body has proposed to raise tariffs by 15% to 16% for the domestic sector.

The proposed hike is 15% for commercial sector and 31% for industries. However, the actual revision will happen only next year after the regulator seeks public opinion. The last power tariff hike was effected in the state two years ago.

Responding to the commission’s notice, chief minister J Jayalalithaa, seeking to distance herself from the commission’s tariff revision plan, said in a statement that the government would release additional grants to the electricity board to insulate the poor from the tariff hike.

As per the Electricity Act, if the state government does not bridge the revenue gap in the form of grants to the power utility, the commission has powers to announce tariff revision.

Objections and suggestions should be sent to TNERC before October 23.
