The central station in Chennai will no more have its gloomy outlook on its concourse area. The areas is given plenty of transparent synthetic roofing by railway engineers and it has got a completely new look. The place has also turned healthy and it makes use of very less electricity sine last month.
Southern Railway took suggestions from energy and design consultants and made set up to replace the opaque roofing with transparent synthetic sheets. This allows natural light to pass through which in turn keeps the entire area illuminated. Ever since this set up was made, only 75 lamps are turned during late hours of the day, after 6.30 pm.
This new system saves about 20 to 30 units of power in one hour. This betterment in lighting has improved the cleanliness, especially a huge reduction in spitting is noticed. Speaking to one of the officials, he says people find it easy to identify garbage bins and they do not litter all around like before.
