Chennai Corporation will soon open two e-toilets on Gandhi Mandapam Road. By year-end, there will be such facilities in 100 locations, including Kachaleeswarar Nagar, Broadway Road, Anna Salai and Thiruvalluvar Nagar.
The project to set up e-toilets in 348 locations across the city will include setting up she-toilets with sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators. The corporation conducted a detailed survey of the places where they are required and the toilets will come up near bus shelters, markets and open spaces.
Aimed at benefiting people who remain outdoors all day, including vendors, construction workers and police officers, the toilets are automatically cleaned after five uses. The fans and lights are designed to turn on and off after a person enters or leaves. All units will be fitted with a GPRS device to alert civic officials in the event of theft, vandalism or encroachment. They will also have a voice complaint system where a user can simply press a button and record a complaint.
