The University of Madras has dropped out its plan of maintaining swimming pool present in its Chetpet ground which was earlier finalized at a project cost of Rs 84 lakh. The university initially got into a maintenance contract of the pool well before it was constructed. The project is now handed over to a private firm.
The decision was made during a syndicate meet held on Monday which should have seen participation from government officials, but failed to receive a good number. Queries were shot on why the project was decided to get handed over to private firm. It was then decided to delete the earlier finalization made on the project.
According to sources, the syndicate meeting was attended by none of the government official. This is said as the primitive reason for quitting the project. The decision to hand over the project to a private firm was made well before the construction of the pool.
