Osteoporosis is believed to occur in elderly individuals. However, a recent study report given by Madras Medical College alerts that even young adults have chances of developing the disease. The rheumatology department of the hospital performed screening of 1172 people belonging to the age group 20 to 40 out of which 80% comprised women. Out of this population, 75% of them had osteoporosis or osteoporia had early stages of the disease.

Dr S. Rajeswari, professor and HOD of rheumatology, MMC and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital says the primitive aim behind performing the study is lack of awareness about osteoporosis. According to doctors, people eye on the disease only after the disease develops notable complications in our body.

Most doctors are concerned more about elderly and women who are more prone to this disease in their perimenopausal or postmenopausal period. The bone mass of human body is said to get at its peak between 20 and 30 years of age. This time period is very crucial and needs avid focus on building the strength of bone.
