September 8 being observed as World Physiotherapy Day, city-based physiotherapists have come together to raise awareness about this healthcare profession. “For ages, healthcare model that was employed, focussed on the bio-medical model of recovery which arbitrarily believes that once the disease process is arrested or reversed, the health of the individual is automatically reversed. This model of reasoning is fine as far as one is dealing with conditions such as malaria or typhoid. But for a large section of problems, it is impossible to zero-in on a single pathogen like lifestyle disorders or where the disease process cannot be reversed (neurological and degenerative injuries), physiotherapy is the answer,” Dr Dhanajeyan said. To raise awareness about the discipline and also guide the people on how to reach a professional physiotherapist, members of the Bangalore Physiotherapists` Network are observing Physiotherapy Week from September 6.
