99% Buildings In North Chennai Locality Flout Rules

According to a preliminary survey carried out by the Chennai Corporation more than 99% of all buildings in George Town were constructed either without an approved plan or in utter disregard for rules.

The corporation surveyed 11,304 buildings on roads having less than 9 metres width, and found only 72 were built as per plan.

CMDA member secretary A Karthik submitted a status report saying a total of 3,146 buildings stood on the 30 streets which are more than 9 metres wide. Of them, 3,080 had violated one or more development control rules.

Shocked by this revelation in the status reports filed by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and Chennai corporation, Madras high court has asked state agencies to come out with concrete proposals within four weeks to undo the mess.
