As the first phase, new smart cards based on Aadhar card format instead of ration card will be distributed in the districts of Ariyalau & Perambalur.
A meeting was conducted recently on this in Chennai presided by the Food Minister, Mr. Kamaraj.
A PDS official who participated in this meeting informed:
New rations cards WILL NOT be distributed in Tamil Nadu during 2015. As practised over the last 4 years, only additional sheets are to be pasted in the old ration cards.
Official news on this is expected to be announced by December.
Based on the Aadhar card format, a new electronic smart card will be issued. In the first phase, these smart cards will be distributed in the 90% of districts where Aadhar cards have already been distributed.
The distribution of the new smart cards will start in the districts of Ariyalur & Perambalur and activities toward this has already commenced.
So far, Aadhar cards have been distributed in 75% of Tamil Nadu.
Special permanent camps are planned in each Taluk office to complete issue of Aadhar cards for the balance 25%.
Once this is completed, distribution of new smart cards based on these Aadhar cards will be started.
