TANGEDCO has set a target to install new digital electronic energy meters in place of the old energy meters (36.87 Lakhs).
As per the central government’s Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP), the task of replacing the old energy meters with new digital energy meters had been taken up in the Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and some other districts in Tamil Nadu.
Under this plan, a target of replacing 31.86 Lakhs single-phase energy meters and 12.34 3-phase energy meters.
So far, 7.33 Lakh old energy meters have been replaced with new digital energy meters.
The balance of 36,87 lkah meters will be installed before December, 2015.
Digital energy meters have the advantages of being precise and tamper-proof.
This will give a 20-way advantage of avoiding pilferage of power and the best accurate measurement. This is expected to pave the way for improvement in revenue as well.
In Chennai city, 2.77 Lakhs energy meters have been replaced so far with digital energy meters out of a total of 18 lakh meters.
