Despite protests by villagers, the water resource department is taking steps for connecting the two water bodies Thervoy Kandigai and Kannankottai in Tiruvallur as a step to provide drinking water to the city. According to WRD officials, this project will get wrapped up by May next year. The Rs 330 crore worth reservoir project is said to get constructed in a magnificent area of 1495 acres land space. This comprises of 633 acres of government land, and 55 acres belong to reserve forest areas. The remaining are patta lands.
The project involves land acquisition of over 806 acres from Kannankottai and Thervoy Kandigai villages belonging to Gummidipondi taluk. Land owners of over 76 acres of land went on with a plea to the court challenging the process of land acquisition. However, these petitions were dismissed last week after revenue officials took possession of the lands used for agricultural purpose.
Following the protest by farmers, Tiruvallur district collectors instructed the WRD officials not to get into land acquisition process until harvesting works get over.
The reservoir construction works are currently on the go. The new reservoir is said to have a capacity of 1000 million cubic feet.
