Chennai Metro Rail Project, taken up at a cost of Rs. 14600 Crores in order to reduce the prevalent traffic congestions in Chennai city. The project covers 2 corridors.
The trains for the project have been ordered from Alstom, Brazil. 42 trains with 4 coaches each were ordered at a cost of Rs. 1471 Crores.
The first 9 trains were manufactures at Brazil and then shipped to Chennai.
The balance 33 trains are manufacture at Alstom’s factory established in Sri City, Tada, Andhra Pradesh.
So far, the 9 trains from Brazil have reached Chennai city and are at Koyambedu. 6 trains have been transported by road from Sri City.
One more train from Sri City reached Koyambedu, Chennai yesterday.
Metro project officials informed about the project:
Metro workshop has been built in 26 hectare land at Rs. 198.10 Crores. 14 trains are being tested. Test runs will be conducted at 800 metre distance.
The section between Koyambedu and Alandur will be open for the public early next year.
The balance trains are expected within the next 1-2 months.
