Jandhan Yojana scheme was opened to facilitate everyone in the country to open savings accounts in banks.
Arrangements have been made to provide for an insurance against accidents of Rs. 12 Lakh while opening Jandhan account.
There is also a provision for an overdraft for Rs. 5000/- to be available 6 months after opening the account.
A target has been set for opening 7.5 Crore Jandhan accounts before 25th January.
It is gathered that it is sufficient to pay only Rs. 90/- (@ Rs. 3/- per every 1000/- for a total of Rs. 30,000/-) for the insurance provided under this account.
Account holders will start getting the benefits after 26th January.
LIC has set aside a special fund for this.
Depending on the number of accounts, LIC may seek financial assistance from the central government.
So far, more than 7 crore accounts have been opened. Rs. 5400 Crores has been deposited. However, there is no cash balance in more than 5.3 Crore accounts (74%) as per the latest statistics.
4.2 Crore accounts have been opened in rural areas and 2.9 Crore accounts in urban areas.
