National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority of Indian Government has planned to control the pricing for all newly manufactured drugs. In spite of the Central Government’s Policy of price control regarding Pharma drugs, many essential medicines are still being sold at high cost. It has been estimated that yearly Rs.79,000 crore drugs are being sold in Indian Pharmaceutical market.
In 2003, a case was filed in the Supreme Court to introduce price control for the commonly used drugs and most wanted drugs. The court advised that all the life saving drugs must be listed and they must come under the price control regulations. However, even after 10 years only 348 medicines are listed.
Now, with the order from Central Government, NPPA is including 100 drugs more in the list. This list will contain the most commonly used drugs such as pain killers and drugs for anxiety, depression, HIV, Pneumonia related diseases. As India is a country where many families has become poor due to the purchase of costly medicines, this step from the Government is most welcome.
