Not ready to take any chance, the city police have jumped into action to ensure the safety of women travelling in call taxis. This follows the rape of a 27-year-old MNC executive by a cab driver in New Delhi on 5 December.
According to highly placed sources in the department, apart from conducting meetings with cab operators and companies who have women working in night shifts, the police have begun collecting the database of drivers. `A background check is being conducted on them,` sources said.
For the past few days, awareness meetings are taking place with popular cab operators in the city.
`We are collecting their antecedents and this verification process is a mandate. Cab operators should appoint them only after the verification is produced by drivers,` an official said.
Meanwhile, cab service operators in the city have also taken measures on the safety of their passengers.
Officials at NTL claim that they carry out verification for every driver before recruiting. `Recently three drivers were sacked after finding they had criminal charges against them,` they said.
The officials further said that their cars already have panic button.
