High-end users in the state will pay more for power with the tariff being increased by 15% with effect from Friday. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, which conducted hearings across the state to gauge public response to the proposed revision, on Thursday issued orders revising the tariff.

While TNERC increased tariff across the board, the state government has decided to spare low-end domestic consumers the burden by absorbing the hike for those with a bimonthly consumption of less than 500 units. Similarly, farmers, huts and power looms will be out of the purview of the hike.

Of the 1.71 crore domestic consumers, 1.61 crore consume less than 500 units. Since they will be protected by the subsidy , only 10 lakh households, which consume more than 500 units, will be hit by the hike. Currently , a domestic consumer pays Rs 5.75 per unit if the usage crosses 500 units. Now, he will pay Rs 6.60 for every unit after the 500-unit limit.

TNERC directed the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited to take immediate steps to implement the increase, but said it was subject to the outcome of two petitions pending in the Madras high court.
