The Tamil section of the Anna Centenary Library (ACL) at Kotturpuram was opened to public yesterday subsequent to its official inauguration few weeks before. Nearly one lakh books pertaining to different genre will be available at this Tamil section in the second floor of the building.

The first floor of the library is organized for comfort reading and children’s section. The second floor for Tamil and the third floor for English. More sections – Medicine, Management and Engineering, Science and Technology would also be opened in the third floor in 15 days with nearly two lakh books, said officials of the Public Library.

At present, the Braille section and the wings for children and periodicals are open to readers. While children can borrow books for a nominal membership fee from November 14, lending of books at other sections would begin in January. A decision on membership fee at ACL is to be taken soon, said G. Arivoli, Director of Public Libraries.

The 32 district central libraries in the State will be networked online with Connemara Public Library and ACL in a month. Nearly 80 per cent of the project taken up by National Resource Centre for Free Open Software, Anna University, has been completed. A demonstration of the project was held at ACL on Thursday. Officials of the Department of Public Libraries said once the networking is completed, people can gain access to information about the libraries and their catalogues. Besides checking availability of books, members can also renew books online.
