Old Tamil Classics such as Parimelazhagar’s explanation of Thirukkural, Nachinarkkiniyar’s explanation of Tholkappiyam, etc contained in around 2400 palm-leaf format have been computerised and released on the internet.
The state government’s eastern palm-leaf recorded formats library is functioning in the Chennai University complex under the department of Archaeology.
The records kept in the palm-leaf format were very ancient and required ultra careful protection. The state government decided to take action to protect them.
Totally, there are 72,748 palm-leaf records.
In the 1st phase, 2,400 palm-leaf records which included Parimelazhagar’s interpretation of Thirukkural and Nachinarkkiniyar’s interpretation of Tholkappiyam were taken up and computerised.
A function of the release of these on the internet was conducted yesterday (13th January) at the Egmore Museum.
Minister K. Veeramani participated and released the computerised internet format of the Tamil classics.
