Now the Pongal holidays are over and people will have to return to work today. Because of this there is a heavy congestion of traffic.

People who were returning to Chennai from the southern parts of Tamil Nadu have to wait at a distance of 2 kms to reach the tollgate. Similarly there was a heavy congestion of traffic at the Samayapuram Tollgate on the Trichy- Chennai highway. Heavy traffic congestion could also be witnessed at Perungalathur because most of the traffic from the Southern Districts have to pass that way.  Around 8.7 lakh people, which is about 18% of Chennai’s population, travelled out of the city in the last five days during the Pongal festival.

As many as 7,250 extra buses were brought in across the state to handle the rush.

Government buses saw a record sale of tickets.
