In order to eradicate crime in Chennai, it has been decided to fit surveillance camera in 200 police patrol jeeps. Chain snatching, robbery and other offences are taking place regularly in Chennai. Police Commissioner George had earlier ordered the police to totally eradicate the crime in the city. In spite of this, the crime rate did not reduce. So the Commissioner of Police George held a meeting with regard to this with the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Flower Bazaar, Washermanpet, Madhavaram, Adyar, St Thomas Mount, T Nagar, Triplicane, Kilpauk, Mylapore, Pulianthope, Anna Nagar and Ambattur.
There is a complaint that police who are allotted patrol duty do not go on patrol and because of this the crime rate has increased. So in order to monitor this, it has been decided to fit cameras in patrol jeeps . There are 134 police stations in Chennai. Initially 100 stations will have two jeeps each fitted with cameras. A special police officer will also be nominated to view the video clippings of the cameras.
