Chennai High Court has informed that the persons who make Public Interest Litigation (PIL) should declare their yearly income details.
Any individual can make a PIL to the court in order to help another person who cannot afford and organise legal help detailing the case.
When a large group of people are affected by an issue, anyone can take this up and make a PIL to the court.
A lot of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) are made in the High Court & Supreme Court.
However, there is some criticism that some that some individuals make PILs for their own publicity & self-interest/benefit.
Both the Supreme Court & High Court are taking initiatives to prevent this by imposing certain restrictions.
Recently, Chennai High Court has brought on a new restriction. A press released from the Chennai High Court Registrar:
The individual making PIL should furnish his/her profession, annual income, PAN (Permanent Account Number) if paying Income Tax, whether the PIL is made on his/her own expenses, the details of expenditure if the PIL is made through others’ fund, etc.
As the press release has been made on the State Government News, it is expected that this restriction would be imposed immediately.
