Revelation to mercury via seafood could rise the hazard of autoimmune disorders, particularly among women of gestation age, a recent study says. Autoimmune disorders, which instigate the body`s immune system to assault the healthy cells by mistake, mostly affect women.
We do not obtain a very good suspect of why people progress autoimmune disorders, said chief experts of University of Michigan Medical and Public Health Schools. In a recent research, revelation to mercury mounted out as the prime risk factor for autoimmunity, experts added.
Autoimmune disease - which can comprise any of such conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, Sjogren`s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis; is among the top leading sources of death among women, the study confirmed.
For an imperative study, the researchers examined data among women who aged 16 to 49 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey during the period of 1999 to 2004. High exposure to mercury was linked with an upper rate of auto antibodies, a pioneer to autoimmune disease. Fish varieties like swordfish, king mackerel and tile fish holds the highest levels of mercury as shrimp, canned light tuna and salmon have lower levels.
The authors confirmed that there were several health benefits to seafood, a thin protein packed with essential nutrients. Though, the women of reproductive age group should be careful of these types of fish when they are eating, says experts. This recent study has printed in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
