Power generation starts in Vallur Thermal Power Station: Additional 930MW to TN Grid!

The 3rd unit of Vallur Thermal Power station has started generating power. Tuticorin NLC Power station will start generation shortly. This will provide an additional 930 MW to Tamil Nadu.

NTPC & TANGEDCO have jointly set up 3 units of 500 MW each at Vallur Thermal Power Station near Thiruvallur. 1040 MW of the generation has been allocated to Tamil Nadu. Vallur Thermal Power Station 1st Unit was scheduled to be commissioned in October, 2010. The 2nd unit was to be commissioned in March,2011. The 3rd unit was to be commissioned in December, 2012.

However, there were long delays and the 1st unit could be commissioned only on 29th December, 2012. The 2nd Unit was commissioned only on 25th August, 2013. 710 MW of the generation is allotted to Tamil Nadu.

The commercial power generation of Vallur TPS 3rd unit started on 10th December, 2014. However, since acute coal shortage was prevailing at that time, NTPC did not announce the generation officially. The unit started generating power for commercial usage at 12.30 AM on Thursday, 26th February. Tamil Nadu will get an additional 230MW.

NLC (Neyveli Lignite Corporation) & TANGEDCO have jointly set up 2 units of 500 MW each in Tuticorin Thermal Power Station. 387 MW has been allotted for Tamil Nadu.The officials have planned to start power generation before the end of March.

NLC has set up 2 units of 250 MW each at its thermal power station in Neyveli under ‘TS2-expnasion’ project. 220 MW from this has been allotted to Tamil Nadu. Test-runs have started in this unit. Commercial generation of power is expected shortly.

Additional 320 MW to Tamil Nadu from Vallur TPS is now available. Further, 385 MW from NLC-Tuticorin & 225 MW from NLC-Neyveli for a total of 610 MW will be allotted to Tamil Nadu before the end of March.
