Mosquitoes poses great problem to Chennai Corporation

Officials of the Chennai Corporation admitted that over the last two weeks, complaints of a multi-fold increase in mosquito numbers have been pouring in from residents across the city via their helpline number 1913. However, officials said that the task to control breeding along streams was made difficult by the retaining walls put up by the Public Works Department.
Clogging in river mouths was also contributing to the breeding.
In any case Chennai Corporation has decided to construct 23-km wall while a sum of Rs 8.5 crore will be spent on clearing solid wastes along the Cooum. The Corporation’s welfare measures like handing out mosquito nets to economically weaker sections, giving off nochi plants and introducing mosquitofish into water bodies have all failed to yield the desired results. The next in line, which is spraying neem oil – an initiative announced by the Mayor during the January council meet — is being tested for its efficacy.
