After four months of shut down of the first unit of 600 MW north Chennai power plant due to a fire accident, it is now restarted to function on Friday. The plant got damaged due to the fire outburst on 8th November last year. When it happened, TNEB promised to resume the function in just three days, but it has taken four solid months to restart.

The reason behind the fire accident was told to be leakage in the oil pipeline. Though nobody was injured in the accident, the pipeline and cables got badly affected. The unit was lit up in the morning hours of Friday and power generation was set to commence by the midnight. This is expected to match the demand-supply gap, say TNEB officials.

In the recent times, the only plant that was left non-functioning was this. Other plants including the one in North Chennai, Ennore, Mettur and Tuticorin were functioning as always.

The rotor in the turbine was changed due to the fire outburst. BHEL commissioned the unit and said it was under the guarantee period. Hence BHEL replaced all the necessary parts including the rotor.
