Today (31st March) is the last day to pay the property tax. This year, Chennai Corporation has collected Rs 540 Crores towards property tax. Officials also said that Rs 220 crore in professional taxes had been collected for the current year, which is Rs 9 crore more than what was collected during 2013-14.

Property tax worth Rs 502 crore has been collected as on March 10, against a target of Rs 600 crore set for 2014-15, making it the first time that the civic body has managed to do so. Officials attributed the achievement to strict collection routine which included innovative and bizarre techniques in equal measure.

Innovative techniques included offering online facilities to pay taxes, setting up of common collection centres in unit, division and zonal offices — all of which reduced the need for residents to queue up at the headquarters to pay property tax.

Bizarre techniques, meanwhile, included beating the dhandora at the doorstep of violators and, albeit controversially, making transgenders dance to the dhandora, and also occasionally dumping garbage in front of the property.
