The prices of all vegetables have tended to reduce in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market in the last few weeks.
As the quantity of vegetables arriving has reduced, the prices have picked up recently.
The prices of brinjal, lady’s finger, bunch-beans, and bitter gourd are down. However, the price of beans, flat beans, etc have gone up as compared to last week.
Prices of vegetables harvested from mountainous areas like beetroot, turnip, carrot, and chow-chow have not changed and are sold at the same price as last week.
Chennai Koyambedu Market Traders’ Assocation consultant, Mr. Soundararajan informed that around 300 to 310 trucks bring vegetables to the wholesale vegetable market. Prices of vegetables like beans, flat beans, etc which sold at lower prices have now gone up due to reduction in quantity of arrival.
Last week, beans were sold at Rs. 25/- to Rs. 30/- per kg. However, yesterday (Thursday, 16th April ), beans was sold at Rs. 50/- per kg. Flat beans, which was sold at Rs. 15/- to Rs. 20/- per kg last week, was sold at Rs. 30/- per kg yesterday.
Normally, small onion prices used to be higher in this season. However, the prices of small onions have come down now. It was sold at Rs. 35/- to Rs. 40/- per kg last week. However, small onions were sold at Rs. 25/- per kg yesterday. It is worth recalling that around the same period last year, small onions were sold at Rs. 40/- per kg.
Due to good harvest, small onions are brought in 10 trucks from Tharapuram, Oddanchathiram, and Theni to Koyambedu. Even as the prices of vegetables are down, the sales also have come down! Relatively, only lower quantity of vegetables is getting sold.
